Our Curriculum Philosophy

At Stamford Big Picture Learning Academy (SBPLA), learning is personalized, rigorous, and connected to the real world. Our curriculum is designed to ensure that every student graduates prepared for both college and career, while also meeting the State of Connecticut graduation requirements. Students in our inaugural year are taking Personal Finance, Civics, Music, Anatomy & Physiology, Algebra or Geometry, and Independent Study, all of which prepare them to fully engage in internships and off-campus learning experiences.

English Language Arts (ELA) is central to every student’s success, strengthening reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills that are essential for college, career, and civic life.

Personal Finance equips students to manage money responsibly, a critical skill as they begin internships and plan for life after high school.

Civics helps students understand how government and communities function, preparing them to be informed, active citizens.

Anatomy & Physiology gives students essential knowledge of the human body, particularly valuable for those interning in health care or interested in animal sciences.

Mathematics (Algebra or Geometry) develops problem-solving and logical reasoning skills essential for any career path.

Independent Study provides students with space to explore their interests, build independence, and practice self-directed learning.

All SBPLA students will meet the Connecticut high school graduation requirements, which include earning 25 total credits in the following areas:

  • 9 credits in Humanities (English, Social Studies, Civics, Fine Arts, and electives)

  • 9 credits in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)

  • 1 credit in Physical Education and Wellness

  • 1 credit in Health and Safety Education

  • 2 credits in World Languages

  • 1 credit in Mastery-Based Demonstration of Competencies

  • 2 elective credits in courses of choice

Our Connecticut-certified teachers ensure that instruction is aligned with state standards while honoring the Big Picture Learning philosophy of real-world application and student choice. By combining academic rigor with internships, mentorships, and community partnerships, we empower students to graduate not only with a diploma but with meaningful experiences, personal skills, and a strong sense of responsibility for their futures.

At SBPLA, every student’s education is personal, purposeful, and powerful—connecting classroom learning with the world they will lead tomorrow.
